COACHES' EXPECTATIONS
BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING
Practice Rules:
1) You should be punctual for practices.
2) Captains and/or seniors will begin practices on time with stretching and warm ups.
3) Excused Absence: (Absence due to illness or family emergencies.)
4) Unexcused Absence: (Absences that are not listed as excused or cleared with the coach are considered unacceptable.)
5) Wrestlers should strive to be cooperative, attentive, positive, and work to the best of their abilities.
6) All wrestlers are required to wear clean clothing each day. All practice clothing used that day must be taken home to be washed the same day.
7) Be coachable--we are only trying to make you the best!
8) Missed practice time could result in missed meet time.
9) Injured wrestlers must attend all practices and matches unless otherwise excused by the coaching staff. (Even when injured, you are expected to support your teammates as you are still a member of the team.)
10) You are expected to weigh in every day before and after practice.
Locker Room Rules:
1) Please keep locker room clean. This includes the floor and top of lockers also.
2) Be sure you lock up all your equipment. (This includes during your shower.)
3) Each athlete is expected to conduct himself in an acceptable manner. There should not be any running, horseplay, towel snapping, or any other behavior which could be hazardous to oneself or others.
4) Shower rooms are not to be used as a sauna and the water should be turned off when you are finished showering.
5) Athletes must respect team members' equipment and personal belongings.
6) The scale is expected to be used appropriately--do not spill fluids on scale and do not jump or bounce on scale.
7) Hazing, harassment, or bullying of any degree will not be tolerated.
8) All wrestlers are expected to shower daily; right after each practice. Have soap and shampoo in plastic containers in your wrestling locker. Anti-bacterial soap is recommended. A clean towel daily is recommended. (The school provides towels--DO NOT HOARD THEM!)
9) No cell phones should be in view in the locker room at any given time. Cell phones can be used outside the locker room environment.
Meet Conduct:
1)Good sportsmanship and behavior will be shown to officials, opponents, teammates and coaches at all times.
2) You are to be ready and "at weight" when weigh-ins begin.
3) At all home meets, all wrestlers will help set up and take down equipment needed for the meet.
4) All wrestlers are expected to stay and watch the other wrestlers/teammates compete.
5) All wrestlers are expected to compete in all meets unless excused by the head coach.
6) Missed meets could result in being suspended from the team.
7) The head coach will decide the line-up for all meets and tournaments.
Transportation Conduct:
1) All team members are required to ride the team bus both to and from our out-of-town dual meets.
2) For out-of-town tournaments, an exception may be made if you travel with your parents. Parents must speak directly with the head coach to confirm that their son/daughter will be riding home with them.
3) Athletes will refrain from yelling from the bus and will conduct themselves in an adult manner.
4) The bus is to be kept clean at all times.
5) The rear door of the bus is to be used for emergencies only.
Equipment Care:
1) All members will be issued equipment only after all required forms are completed and turned into the head coach.
2) All team personnel are expected to participate in fundraisers (as needed) with the funds being used to purchase team practice gear (shirts, shorts, etc). Team members are expected to raise the amount of money to cover practice gear or will pay the difference.
3) One week after the last scheduled meet, all issued wrestling equipment will be turned in and should be in cleaned and in good condition. Any equipment which is lost or not returned at the end of the season must be paid for by the athlete. The replacement charges for equipment will be determined by the school.
Unacceptable Language:
Swearing/cursing and/or name calling is considered unacceptable behavior whether it is at practice, meets or in the locker room. Coaches will deal with any situation on an individual basis.
Dress Code:
1) All wreslters are expected to wear wrestling clothing to practices.
2) Only meet uniforms are allowed for meets & tournaments. It is our intent that all team members look the same--demonstrating that they are a part of our team.
3) Clothing (t-shirts, hats, etc) that advertise or address alcohol, drugs or tobacco are unacceptable at all times and will not be tolerated at meets or practice.
Training Rules:
1) Eat, sleep and live like a champion!!!
2) Athletes should have plenty of sleep to be well rested for all practices. 8-9 hours of nightly sleep is recommended.

4) Team members are expected to be home by 10PM or earlier the night before a meet.
5) Phone calls may be made by the coaching staff, directly to the student athlete, for curfew checks.
Criminal Conduct:
Any violations will be handled through a conference with the Athletic Director. (Considered as theft of property, vandalism, assault, or other violations of criminal law.)
Other Items:
1) The wrestling staff expects each team member to act responsibly and show respect for one another.
2) Team members are student athletes and they are expected to attend all of their classes. (i.e. cutting classes is unacceptable)
3) It is unacceptable for any team member to be at a party or any gathering where there are drugs and/or alcohol present.
4) Any in-season training violation involving tobacco, alcohol or drugs may result in dismissal from the wrestling team.
5) Any Berlin High School wrestler with an athletic code violation (at any grade--9-12); from any school (including transfer students) is ineligible to hold a captain or co-captain position on the wrestling team.
6) Any wrestler serving a detention after school will be expected to make up missed practice time the same day the detention is served. Maximum of 30 minutes of intensive training.
7) Wrestlers should strive to demonstrate that Berlin wrestling tries to be the best possible. Only positive talk/discussion is encouraged.
8) These expectations apply to Berlin High School wrestlers, managers, scorekeepers etc.
9) All Berlin High School Athletic Rules regarding grades and behavior apply to all team members.
